I was a big fan of The Animals back in my hippie wannabe days, and I still remember that song about the blues. It really is true, as the roots of rock ’n’ roll go back to the blues tradition of the 30s, 40s, and early 50s. (Check out the first album by Led Zeppelin; there are three songs on there which are covers of traditional blues songs.) SHOUT BACK

Shout Back" is Broadway Phil and the Shouters' 2008 release. Ten songs, written by Phil Newton, draw from the R&B, gospel and folk traditions that are the bedrock of American music. From the ferocious harmonica/slide roar of Train and the Bo Diddley poetry of Diamonds to the twilight guitar lament of Been and Gone, "Shout Back" aims straight for the heart. Recorded at Hartkop Productions in Southern Oregon, "Shout Back" features spare, slightly-vintage production, with the basic tracks recorded live. The crystaline "Hartkop Reverb" enhances the roots stylings of "Shout Back," taking the listener on a journey back to the future.
